Blog: Get to know the KnowHow Team

The four members of the KnowHow team

The KnowHow Team in the Library lead a programme of academic support for students to help you through your studies. Here, the team tell us how they adapted during lockdown and have continued to make their academic support programmes available to students online.

Since March we’ve all had to get used to a new way of life, and a new way of work. Our KnowHow team is only small, but we managed to adapt quickly to offer support for online assessments and create learning materials for online learning.

Writing@Liverpool

Our popular Writing@Liverpool service moved online, allowing one to one appointments to take place over Microsoft Teams. If you need some help with being more critical, responding to feedback, structuring your writing or referencing, then you can find out more and book an appointment with one of our postgraduate writing tutors.

Online sessions and support

We also converted our face to face workshops into webinars, again delivered over Microsoft Teams. This was quite challenging, trying to think of new ways to teach online, including online activities, but we managed to make mini activities, and use polling software like Kahoot to keep our sessions interactive. Our webinar topics include referencing, essay writing, time management, note taking, statistics and lots more. These have been really popular, and once we can get back in our teaching space, we still plan to offer some sessions online too!

We’ve had great feedback from these sessions and it’s been really rewarding to help students while they get to grips with new ways of learning. Discover the full list of sessions available this semester and book your place.

If you can’t make our webinars, we have also been creating online tutorials, which can be accessed anytime through Canvas (KnowHow: Study for Success) or VITAL (KnowHow: Academic Success). Learning how to use Canvas has been quite a learning curve for us over the summer, and we’re still getting to grips with its little quirks!

Stats@Liverpool

Over the summer we were kept busy working on materials for Foundation Week, and recruiting tutors for a whole new service – Stats@Liverpool! If you need any help and support with statistics, then you can book a one-to-one appointment with one of our postgraduate statistics tutors.

And yes, amongst all that there have been times when we have taught in pyjama pants, bribed pets to be quiet with their favourite treats, discovered our Wi-Fi doesn’t quite reach our gardens in order to work and tan, and taken advantage of being able to turn our video off in meetings to make (another) cup of tea.

Having regular contact with the rest of Education team in the Library really helped, and we even managed to maintain our office tradition of Music Friday – where a theme is selected and everyone gets to play a song. We really enjoyed making the Liverpool Mystery- an online puzzle for students to solve which introduces some of our lovely Library staff, and being involved in Foundation week helped us meet many more students than we would normally.

So while we can’t wait to be back in our KnowHow space in the Sydney Jones Library, and eat that chocolate orange left in the office cupboard, we hope that in the meantime you’ll come and see us online in one of our webinars, or take a look at our online tutorials.
