About the Library Disability Support Service

The library works with the University Disability Support Team in helping support students with additional needs. Library staff aim to ensure that students with additional support requirements are able to make full use of the Library facilities. In order to take full advantage of all the Library's resources and services it is important to make yourself known to Library staff as soon as possible after starting your course, so please contact us using one of the Contact Us options on this page.

Accessibility information for Liverpool campus libraries:

We check key items across your module reading lists, but if you know you are going to need your books in an accessible format please request these as early as possible. Please contact the Accessible Texts Team to check if an eBook can be purchased, or for book chapter or journal article conversions to accessible formats use SensusAccess (see below).

Students studying with our E-Learning partner Kaplan Open Learning (KOL) can obtain accessibility support for KOL platforms by contacting student support shown in your KOL student portal.

About the Library Disability Support Service

Library books and materials can be requested via our Click and Collect service.

The standard borrowing entitlements apply to all staff and students, including automatic renewal of all items on loan, unless requested by another user.

If you are not able to visit the library to pick up your books, please see below for information on our Book and Copy Delivery service.

We will post out standard loan copies of books free of charge.

RNIB Bookshare support learners with a print disability. They provide accessible textbooks and resources for learners with sight loss, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and qualifying physical disabilities under the Copyright and Rights in Performances (Disability) Regulations 2014.

Titles can be downloaded by students who can read them electronically or adapt into various accessible formats (PDF, Word, DAISY, audio, BRF). See the Bookshare website for details.

 

Most accessible study rooms have height adjustable desks with PCs available; exceptions are shown below. Students on a support plan can make an accessible study room booking online by selecting the SSIS Accessible Study Rooms for the Library you wish to study in. Moderated bookings have to be approved to ensure that only students with an SSIS are able to book the room, so bookings cannot be made for the same day. Harold Cohen Library Accessible Study Rooms

The following rooms are available in the Harold Cohen Library:

  • The Ground Floor Accessible Study Room is a single study space with capacity for a student and their support worker. It has 2 adjustable desks with a PC on each desk and a printer
  • The Social Accessible Study Space has 10 individually-bookable spaces (8 are desk spaces and 2 are PC spaces)
  • 3c - bookable by one person; 2 non-adjustable desks, 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 3d - bookable by one person; 2 non-adjustable desks, 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
Sydney Jones Library Accessible Study Rooms

You do not need to book an extra space for your support worker for any of these rooms.

The following accessible study rooms are available in the Grove Wing in the Sydney Jones Library:

  • 1a - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 1g - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 1h - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 1n - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 2a - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 2h - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • 2j - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker

The following accessible study rooms are available in the Accessible Study Area, in the Abercromby Wing in the Sydney Jones Library:

  • Individual Accessible Study Room - 1 height-adjustable table, Ergonomic chair, 1 PC, soft seating area with 1 chair, capacity for student and support worker
  • 1g - 2 desks and 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker
  • Study Booth 1 - 1 height-adjustable table with wrist support, Ergonomic chair, 1 PC, capacity for student and support worker

The Sydney Jones Library Sensory Room - capacity for student and support worker

The Digital Message Service (DMS) is a telephone based fire safety system used to alert people who are deaf, or hard of hearing, that the fire alarm has been activated. It is installed in the following Library buildings:

  • Sydney Jones Library
  • Harold Cohen Library
How it works
Signing up for the DMS text alert system

Signage will inform you about DMS, with a number and location code to text (charged at standard SMS rate):

  • Visit a location where the DMS system is installed.
  • You will receive a text from the DMS server informing you that you are connected to the DMS for that location. This text will come from Fireco, and includes a link to set preferences, including the method's you'd like to be alerted and the option to opt out of the service.

  • You only need to register once. Whenever the alarm is activated in your chosen library/libraries, you'll receive an alert through your preferred method(s), whether you're in the building or not.

When the fire alarm sounds
  • Within seconds of the fire alarm sounding, a text message will be sent to all people registered to the location, informing them that the fire alarm has been activated and asking them to make their way to the nearest exit.

  • You will still receive a text even if it is a test alarm sounding, so take a note of when this will be (usually around the same time every week). Contact us to find out the latest information about weekly tests.
