Maker Space Code of Conduct

Users agree to:

  • Adhere to this code of conduct and the Maker Space acceptable usage policy.
  • Present their ID card and student/staff details upon request.
  • Respect staff and students within the Maker Space. Abusive and aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to the Technician and to the University’s Safety Advisors Office.
  • Report anything that feels unsafe immediately, including slip, trip and machine hazards.
  • Act in a safe manner at all times.
  • Adhere to all local Health and Safety rules outlined by staff and relevant documentation.
  • Only use equipment and tools as instructed by staff and in demonstrations.
  • Respond to emergency alarms and other situations instructed by staff.
  • Respect the privacy of others and their projects. Do not touch any project or materials that do not belong to you.
  • Tidy up after yourself, ensuring any rubbish is disposed of/recycled and equipment and tools are ready for the next user.

Users will not:

  • Enter the Maker Space without a staff member present.
  • Use any equipment without agreement from the Technician.
  • Display any threatening or intimidating behaviour.
  • Use the space to create or manufacture any items that could be used as a weapon, or an item intended to cause harm.
  • Create any items that contain hateful or prejudiced iconography.
  • Remove any tools or pieces of equipment from the Maker Space.
  • Bring in their own tools or equipment to use in the space.
  • Deface or damage tools or equipment.
  • Display behaviour that may be deemed unsafe or harmful to others.

Food and drink

You must not consume food or drink when using any pieces of equipment. Drinks are permitted in the space but please ensure that they are kept away from machinery and that bottles have a lid. Please ensure that any spillages are dealt with immediately.

Acceptable use of IT equipment

Users may bring in their own laptop to the Maker Space and connect to University WiFi or network point if available. When using the Maker Space computers, users will have to log in with their MWS account. Please ensure that you have logged out when you have finished. Users of University IT equipment must comply with the University’s IT Acceptable Use Policy.

Non-compliance

Users who do not comply with the code of conduct may be asked to leave the premises. Repeated disregard for the code of conduct may result in access being suspended or revoked.

Maker Space acceptable usage policy Access:

The Maker Space will be open to students from 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm, Monday to Thursday during term time. If the key lock is on then the Technician is on a break.

Specific Equipment:

Laser Cutting

Users will need to attend the Laser Cutter training session before using this piece of equipment, even if you have used a similar machine during your studies. You will not be able to book a laser cutting appointment until you have completed the training. Under no circumstances will files with the intention of creating weapons, an item intended to cause harm or offensive objects be accepted. This includes items that contain hateful or prejudiced iconography. The Technician has the final say on what can and cannot be printed, we ask that you respect the decision that is made. The Maker Space has a limited amount of materials for students to use. All of these materials are from our preferred suppliers and are specifically chosen for their compliance with laser cutting. Students can bring their own materials but they must be purchased from the preferred supplier list. A material safety data sheet (MSDS) may be requested.

3D Printing (Ultimaker and Raise 3D DF2)

3D Printing is a staff mediated service, your file will be assessed by a member of staff before printing. If we can print your file then you will be added to our print queue. Please allow up to 5 working days for your print to be ready.
Students are currently not permitted to use any of the 3D printers without a member of staff. Under no circumstances will weapons, an item intended to cause harm or offensive objects be printed. Similarly, any files that are considered to contain offensive language and hateful or prejudiced iconography will not be printed.
The Technician has the final say on what can and cannot be printed, we ask that you respect the decision that is made.
Users cannot bring in their own filaments or resins for 3D Printing. If there is a particular material you would like to try, please speak to the Technician.

VR (Virtual Reality)

Consult a doctor before using the VR headsets if you are pregnant, elderly, have pre-existing binocular vision abnormalities or psychiatric disorders, or have a heart condition or other serious medial condition.

Seizure risk. Virtual content may include flashes of light or patterns that may trigger seizures or other symptoms. Immediately stop use and consult a doctor if you experience severe dizziness, seizures, eye or muscle twitching, or black out while using your Meta Quest. Consult a doctor before use if you previously have had a seizure, loss of awareness or other symptoms linked to an epileptic condition.

Magnetic components. The VR headsets contain magnets and components that emit magnetic/ electromagnetic fields which could affect the operation of nearby electronics and medical devices, including cardiac pacemakers, hearing aids and defibrillators. If you have a pacemaker, hearing aid or other implanted medical device:

  • Maintain a safe distance between the medical device and your Meta Quest headset and controllers.
  • Consult a doctor or the manufacturer of your medical device before using your Meta Quest.
  • Stop using your Meta Quest if you observe interference with your medical device.

Impairments. Impairments you should avoid when deciding to use the headset include:

  • Influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Hangover or upset stomach;
  • Fatigue, exhaustion or sleeplessness;
  • Emotional stress or anxiety
  • Infectious disease, headache, migraine, or earache. Stop using the Meta Quest if you feel motion sickness, discomfort or other physical symptoms during or after use. Don’t resume until you have fully recovered from discomfort or other symptoms.

VR Usage recommendations The Maker Space staff advise that users sit down whilst using the headsets and the VR room will be set up for this when you arrive. If a user decides that they would prefer to use the headset standing up then they do so at their own risk.

Cricut Maker 3

Training on this piece of equipment is mandatory. You will not be able to book a Cricut Maker 3 appointment until you have completed the training. Files that contain offensive language or imagery will not be accepted. This includes any design that contains hateful or prejudiced iconography.

Accidents:

Please report any accidents or near misses within the Maker Space immediately to the Technician.

If you notice anything that you think is unsafe, please let the Technician know so that it can be checked and fixed if necessary. Do not try to fix any equipment by yourself.

Using tools and equipment:

Do not use any tools or equipment if you have not been trained to do so. If need refreshing on a piece of equipment or you are unsure about how to use them then please speak to the Technician who can explain and show you how to use it or use the tool or equipment for you.

If you notice anything that you think is unsafe, please let the Technician know so that it can be checked and fixed if necessary. Do not try to fix any equipment by yourself.

Risk Assessments for each piece of equipment are available on request and can be viewed on the Maker Space page.

You may not bring in your own tools and equipment to use in the space. Speak to the Technician if you think you need something that is not available in the space.

Only use tools and equipment for their intended use.

Where necessary, you must use/wear the correct PPE (Personal protective equipment) as advised by staff

Inclusivity:

The Maker Space promotes an inclusive environment for all users regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or socioeconomic status.

Booking limits:

To ensure fair access across the University community, users can only book each piece of equipment once per week. If you think you need more time on a particular machine, please speak to a member of staff.

Machine usage is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Please ensure you plan your work accordingly and book your usage with enough time to complete your project.

Materials and material limits:

The Maker Space has a limited amount of free materials. In some circumstances you may be directed to purchase your own materials, particularly if you are creating a large item. Staff will advise on where to purchase materials if needed. These must be purchased from a preferred supplier and material safety data sheet (MSDS) may be requested.

Occasionally there may be a machine error which damages your material. If this is material that you have purchased yourself then we may be able to offer a replacement or cover the costs of this material up to a value of £20. Please speak to the Technician if you experience any problems on the Maker Space machines.

Prohibitions on designing and manufacturing:

As mentioned, under no circumstances will requests to manufacture items that are deemed to be a weapon or an item designed to cause harm be approved.

Designs that contain offensive language and imagery, hateful or prejudiced components will also be rejected.

The Technician has the final say on whether something can or cannot be manufactured.
