This guide was designed to support Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) literacy, developing student and staff ' understanding of what GAI are and how they can be used effectively.
The guide follows the approach of 'key competencies', a structure used by Duri Long and Brian Magerko in their work 'What is AI Literacy? Competencies and Design Considerations'. This paper was key in guiding many following research papers in understanding the applications of GAI.
This guide is broken down into relevant Competencies from this paper, and expands on these using resources available to help build understanding of the broader picture of GAI.
The guide has been made in partnership between the University of Liverpool and the University of Georgia. Some documentation is more applicable to each organisation (eg policies and procedures), as such sources for each resource have been noted in link titles and descriptions. Both have been included to aid in understanding of how GAI can and are being applied in different organisations.
This section explains the fundamentals of Generative AI, including understanding of technologies used, key characteristics of GAI and an introduction to key approaches and platforms.
There are strengths and weaknesses in the use of Generative AI in academic research and writing. Strengths of GAI include functionality for generating ideas, providing topic summaries and summarising texts, and explaining complex topics. Weaknesses can include incorrect information, questionable sources, lack of context or meaning, and reproduction of inappropriate content (i.e. bias).
The below resources provide examples of these strengths and weaknesses, and guides on how to apply these strengths effectively and mitigate the weaknesses.
This section is a collection of resources that provide insight into policy's related to the use of GAI and ethics of its use. Some of these relate to the use of GAI at University, while others outline use in general to give a broader picture of use. Ethical topics will similarly cover both use at University and ethics of use in general. See the descriptions of each for more details.
This section offers insights into key areas of artificial intelligence development that warrant ongoing attention. Scientific advancements, legal considerations, ethical considerations, and the perspectives of advocacy groups will significantly shape the impact of GAI and other AI tools on our society. Below are resources for further information.
