Student Partner Harriett Byford has spent this past academic year working on a host of exciting projects to support school engagement and development within her role for Libraries, Galleries and Museums. From working with the KnowHow and Widening Participation teams to thinking creatively and strengthening our support to local schools, Harriett has had a year of impactful collaboration and meaningful outreach.

“When I started in this job nearly two years ago, I never thought that the hardest part would be to write about what we’ve achieved, but here we are! How does one sum up so many months of work, meetings, emails, and more in a single post? I am not totally sure but like with everything else I have done since getting this position – I'll give it my all.

Back in September 2023 I was hired as a Student Partner with Libraries, Museums, and Galleries at the University of Liverpool, and I happened to be assigned to the Schools’ Learning and Engagement project. I began working with several members of staff within the team, most prominently my supervisor Zelda Chatten, as I began to understand what it was that I was to work on. The initial brief was to develop and expand upon the University’s offer of support to Sixth Form students studying an EPQ, and looking back, it is amazing to see how far we have come and how much the program has developed.

During my first year, I worked with our incredible colleagues to put together online tutorials, and to create a new page under the Knowhow branding called ‘Knowhow Schools’ where we showcase all our wonderful information on academic skills and booking a visit.  We also had a push on accessibility both on and off campus, updating our tour plans and creating virtual scans of locations for students who cannot make it to campus.

I also collaborated with Widening Participation (WP), delivering sessions at the Liverpool Scholars’ event and creating more interactive activities to help with referencing, critical thinking, and understanding resources, drawing on my own experience as a student. We created a digital flyer, wellbeing resources, and teacher materials to further our outreach and improve visibility.

Being an LMG Student Partner and getting to work on this project has been a privilege, and the skills in collaboration, organisation, and problem solving that I have developed are invaluable. It has shown me so much about the working world, and I am so grateful to have contributed to the progression of this project and feel so proud of how far it has come. I can never thank LMG enough for the opportunity, but I hope the work I have done can continue to offer support for students in many years to come.”
