All good essays start with a plan. Once you have finished your essay plan, it’s time to start writing.

Here are 3 things to think about to improve your essay writing.

  1. Structure your essay

A well-structured essay will help you to present your points clearly and effectively.

Paragraphs:

  • For each new point you present, start a new paragraph
  • Provide and discuss evidence related to the point you make
  • Relate the point to the overall argument of your essay
  • Make sure that your points flow logically from one paragraph to the next

Introduction:

  • The introduction plays an important role in informing the reader of the context, positioning and structure of your essay
  • The introduction should be a blueprint for your essay

Conclusion:

  • Reminds the reader about the significance of your work
  • Should link back to the essay question
  • Don’t just repeat what you have already said
  • Don’t introduce any new points
  1. Be critical

It is important to be critical in your writing and avoid being too descriptive. Consider the significance or implications of the points that you make and expand on this to add depth to your writing and avoid being too descriptive.

Instead of stating ‘who?’, ‘what?’, ‘where?’, ‘when?’, try to answer questions such as ‘why?’ or ‘so what?’

  1. Proofread your work

Proofreading your work will help you to notice any mistakes before you submit it. Proofreading means that you look closely at your work and consider the following:

  • Is the structure logical?
  • Is everything that I have mentioned relevant?
  • Have I used relevant sources?
  • Is my spelling and grammar correct?
