ORCID Affiliation at the University of Liverpool

ORCID affliation project: creating your researcher profile made easy.1 Create ORCID iD. 2 Accept invitation. 3 Increase visibility

Introducing ORCID: a researcher's best friend

ORCID is designed to take admin work off your shoulders, giving you more time for your actual research. Being a free service, it provides an overview over all your research outputs, grants and other activities, connects to other applications and – when it is time – can help provide you with the data you need for promotions or funding. It also helps the library to keep track of your publications and help celebrate your successes, which is why you will soon receive an affiliation invitation to connect your profile with the University of Liverpool.

What is an ORCID ID?

Just as books have ISBNs to identify them, and data and articles have DOIs, people can have an ORCID ID.

This ID is a number sequence just like ISBNs and DOIs that is assigned to a person, and it can connect your publications, professional activities, affiliations, etc. by this unique number instead of just by your name. This has some great advantages: it means, any spelling or abbreviation of the name, any language version, or even a name change, would still connect the correct activities to the correct person.

Register for an ORCID ID for free.

Why get an ORCID ID?

ORCID is great at connecting with other systems, making it easier for data to flow so you don’t have to input metadata of a new publication in different spaces, helping to spend less time on admin. The two most crucial connections are Elements (UoL internal) and Scopus.

In fact, ORCID is so useful that publishers and funders have begun making ORCID IDs mandatory for any output published or funded by them.

This is why we want to encourage all UoL researchers and PGRs to sign up for an ORCID ID and keep their profiles up-to-date.

ORCID Affiliation invitation

The library will be sending out an affiliation invitation via ORCID in the next weeks to all UoL research and teaching & research staff, as well as PGR students. You will receive an email from ORCID with the subject line:

‘University of Liverpool would like to add a validated affiliation to your ORCID record’

Please do the following:

  1. Click on the provided link in the email
  2. Log in to your ORCID profile with your usual credentials, or register for an ORCID ID if you don’t have one already (if you are unsure, ORCID can help)
  3. Accept the affiliation invitation by clicking ‘Authorize access’

This housekeeping exercise helps the University identify your publications and other activities, and saves you time of updating your affiliation information within ORCID.

How do I get the most out of having an ORCID ID?

  1. Log in to your Elements account and connect your ORCID ID. While there, it is worth also connecting your Scopus Author ID that will have been automatically assigned to you if you have published in a Scopus-indexed publication. This way, Elements can receive data from both platforms.
  2. Log in to ORCID and connect your Scopus Author ID – now all three systems can exchange information.
  3. If you wish for ResearchGate to receive data, log in to your ResearchGate account and connect your ORCID ID.

Further instructions and video guidance can be found in our researcher profiles information.
