I’d love to publish open access, but I just haven’t got the funding.
What if we told you that there are options available that will enable you to publish your work open access at no additional cost to yourself or your department? In fact, over 70% of outputs can be covered by our prepaid read and publish agreements, regardless of whether your paper acknowledges research council funding.
At present, we have 31 active agreements with publishers including Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis and Wiley. Our agreements include publishers across all disciplines, so whether you’re an archaeologist or a zoologist, we have you covered.
These are agreements with a publisher whereby we pay upfront for both read access to content, and for articles submitted by our staff to be open access. These agreements are often referred to as 'transitional agreements.'
The broad aim of these agreements is to transform the business model underlying scholarly journal publishing, moving from one based on spend on subscription access to spend on open access publishing instead.
The fees that the Library is paying towards these agreements are covering Article Processing Charges (APCs) for eligible Liverpool authors to publish gold open access in a wide range of journals. The negotiations for these agreements have been done on behalf of UK universities by Jisc Collections and details of their role can be found on their webpages.
To be eligible to publish via one of these agreements, the corresponding author must be affiliated with the University of Liverpool. Unfortunately, these agreements are not available to XJTLU staff so if they wanted to publish open access, they would need to seek funding from elsewhere. If you are unsure whether you qualify, please reach out to the Open Access team (openaccess@liverpool.ac.uk).
This varies between publishers, with some such as the American Chemical Society (ACS) including all journals, including hybrid and fully open access journals, whereas other publishers such as Cold Spring Harbor only include specified journals. A full list of our active agreements can be found via our Open Access pages on the University Website, in the section titled, “Publisher Agreements and Memberships.” We have the database of read and publish titles where you can simply input the title you wish to publish in to see if it is covered by one of our deals. If so, follow the instructions provided. We monitor this database to ensure it contains the most up to date information so it is an excellent starting point.
In order to benefit from these prepaid deals, all you need to do is ensure you use your University of Liverpool email address and list the University of Liverpool as your affiliation where required.
In some cases, you may be prompted to select a licence. When this is the case, you must select “CC-BY”; if you select any other licence, we will not be able to approve the publication and you will become liable for paying for open access.
The database of read and publish titles provides instructions for each deal as they can vary slightly.
In the Open Access Team, our primary aim is to support our researchers in making your work open access so that everybody can benefit from it and celebrate your hard work. We understand that not all outputs will be covered by our prepaid deals, which is why we have found additional ways to help you to make your work open access. Full instructions can be found on our “How to make your work Open Access” page.
Should any further questions arise, please reach out to us at openaccess@liverpool.ac.uk and we’ll be happy to support you in your open access publication journey.
