The Sydney Jones Library will be undergoing major, essential building works starting Monday 5 June. This work is crucial for the ongoing safety and sustainability of the building, but significant disruption is to be expected that could last up to 12 weeks.
These works will require the closure of the 1st and 2nd floors of the Grove Wing and the Abercromby Wing PC Suite (ground floor). Although other parts of the Sydney Jones Library will remain open, study space will be limited and you should expect significant noise levels. The Researcher Reading Room, Prayer Room and Library Garden will remain open throughout and you can still access the Archaeology collection. Special Collection & Archives will remain open, accessible by appointment only.
We have chosen to do this over summer, during our quietest time, to minimise disruption to our users. Colleagues are working hard to mitigate disruption and signpost alternative spaces and services wherever possible, as we understand this period is an important time for our postgraduate and research communities.
During this 12 week period, library users will not be able to get direct, shelf access, to the majority of the Sydney Jones physical book collections. We will operate a Click and Collect service Monday to Friday to provide access to physical materials, and our services and extensive collections will remain available online via the library website and Library Search. The Harold Cohen Library will also stay open throughout summer, with some temporary space closures due to necessary accessibility works.
We recommend visiting the Sydney Jones Library before 5 June to browse and borrow from our collections, but do not worry as we will do our best to accommodate resource needs!
Dr Matt Greenhall, Director of Libraries, Museums and Galleries said:
“We want our libraries to offer the very best service they can to our users, both now and in the future. This will require us to make important and necessary changes to our buildings. Undertaking this work during the summer, when the occupancy of our buildings is at its lowest, will allow contractors to make quicker progress, and inconvenience as few users and colleagues as possible. Thanks to our users for your continued understanding as we undertake this essential work”
