The silent study room in the Harold Cohen Library

Welcome to all our new students starting this year and a big welcome back to our returning students! This year has been challenging but we’re doing our absolute best to continue to offer you the same excellent Library service as always. Some things may look a little different this year, and not what you’re used to, so we have put together a useful guide that sets out everything you need to know to get you started.

Things you need to do

First things first, in order to enter the Library, you will need your student ID card, so if you haven’t already,  you’ll need to follow these instructions to receive your card.

In the meantime, if you download the Library App, you can use the QR code as your ID to enter the libraries. Download the  app by searching UoL Library in App store (Apple) or Play store (Android). The Library App can also be used to book study spaces, borrow books at the self-issue points and view and renew your books.

Opening Times

This year the libraries will be open 10am*-midnight 7 days a week from Monday 28th September. Please see our full opening hours for the most up to date information.

New Library services this year

Booking Study Spaces

To help keep everyone safe this year study space in the libraries is limited so we have introduced a booking system to help us maintain social distancing. You must book a space before you visit as there will be no access for drop-in visits to study or use other services. We encourage you to use the Library where the books for your subject are located, find out which Library you should use.

Click & Collect

There is no access to the bookshelves for browsing. If you wish to borrow physical books from the Library you should reserve the books using our new Click & Collect service.

Book Returns

You can return books by leaving them in our Returns Drop Off boxes, located in the entrance to the libraries. Due to current safety protocols, the books will then remain quarantined for 72 hours, meaning it will take at least 3 days for the books to come off your Library record. Please use the sanitising materials provided for your own safety and that of other library users.

Online resources

Although not entirely new, we have worked hard to expand our digital collections to support your learning. There are plenty of ways to access resources online if you can't visit the Library in person or if you need to use resources that we don't have a physical copy of. We have over 900,000 electronic books and 132,000 electronic journals available to you 24/7 wherever you have an internet connection.

Safety measures in the libraries

Our main priority is to make the Library's services and resources available while keeping everyone safe. We are following government and University guidance and are committed to ensuring that the library is a safe space for everyone.

Safety Measures

In order to make the libraries safe for users, we have introduced the following measures:

  • One-way directional systems;
  • Limited study spaces to ensure that social distancing can be maintained. You must book a study space before you visit;
  • Hand sanitisers in all areas of the Library and cleaning wipes to wipe down equipment before and after use;
  • Perspex screens at Reception desks to protect both staff and users;
  • Book return boxes so that books can be quarantined before they are returned to the bookshelves.

Your Responsibilities

For the safety of our colleagues and other users, it is mandatory to wear a face mask while inside the library.

We also ask that you:

  • Maintain social distancing and follow the clearly marked directional systems in the libraries;
  • Use hand sanitisers provided and wash your hands regularly and wipe down study spaces and equipment using the cleaning materials provided;
  • Do not visit the Library if you are feeling unwell.

For full details and further information about campus safety, please see the  University Guidance

Welcome Week

Running Monday, 28 September to Friday 2 October, Welcome Week offers a range of activities all designed to welcome you to the University. The best way to view all the events and activities on offer is on the University's new Welcome Week app. You can watch the Peer Mentors’ Q&A with the Library to find out more about what we do.

Foundation Week

During Foundation Week you will get to know the Library’s KnowHow team who will be offering a variety of sessions to help you get back into learning.

You will also meet the Liaison Librarian for your subject who can offer specialist support and advice for your subject. You can book an appointment with a Liaison Librarian through our online appointments booking calendar.

Where to get support

Library staff are always on hand to support you with anything you may need. If you need support while you’re in the Library, you can visit the Help Desk and a member of staff will be happy to assist you.

You can also ask our Roving team who you will see around the libraries for support or you can contact them via email:
