Liverpool Culture

There is always something happening in Liverpool. Get out there and go see it for yourself. We pride ourselves on knowing what is going on so please check out the links to the reccomendations made in this episode, below:

Arabic Art Festival - This festival is renowned for bringing, "a thrilling celebration of Arab culture to venues across the city and showcases the richness of Arab culture through a packed program of visual art, music, dance, film, theatre, literature and events".

Blackfest -  This festival is happening each year so set a notification to make sure you don't miss out. Via the organisers,"The program includes music, theatre, film, visual arts spoken word and poetry across community spaces and established venues. The Festival answers a crucial need in the city’s cultural offering, celebrating Black arts and bridging the gap between institutions and the marginalised communities they represent".

We Want Women -  When do we want them? Now! This festival, "Started as a monthly concept open mic night founded by Liverpool performance artist Nicola Hardman in cellar bar and events venue “Lennon’s Bar’ on Mathew Street in October 2015. The aim was to put the voices and work of women in the performing arts to the forefront in a safe, equal and encouraging environment where a supportive community could be built". Good work ladies!

Secret Circus - A staple of the LGBTQ+ community which very much like The Beatles has gone from merry Merseyside to the worldwide stage. "The event aims to give local acts a stage and bring originality back to entertainment". Never mind a plus one, make it a plus two.

The Unusual Art Sourcing Company - It's not unusual to see unusual art in Liverpool. This mind-boggling curation of the weird and wonderful would describe itself as "A Liverpool based performance art project aiming to turn all people into artists through engagement and interaction". Now, that is something we can all get behind.

Independent Liverpool - "Breaking free from the Chain Gangs, Independent Liverpool is about linking up all those little places that fill life's little spaces". The social media alone provides so many suggestions that will make your time in Liverpool that much sweeter. We are proud to say that the creators are in fact, University of Liverpool alumni. This is an essential.

Thank you to our guest Fion Gunn whose current collection 'Arrivals/Departures' is on showcase within the Victoria Museum and Galleries (VGM), located on campus, until 23rd December 2022. It is a sensory experience which transcends the themes of time and culture. Check out the 360 virtual tour.

The collection is open to the public and Fion is often about to give you a tour and provide some deeper insight into this surreal collection.

If you enjoyed Fion's interview, please check out her Fion's YouTube channel. For many videos, Fion uses digital technology to create an artistic space in Virtual Reality.

Liverpool Culture

There is always something happening in Liverpool. Get out there and go see it for yourself. We pride ourselves on knowing what is going on so please check out the links to the recommendations made in this episode, below:

Bluecoat - Located within a grade 1 listed building in the heart of the city, this hidden gem is a contemporary arts centre that aims to provide experimental ways for audiences to enjoy art. There is always a program of dynamic exhibitions and events for all backgrounds and ages.

Calder Stones - a group of six megaliths that now reside inside a greenhouse? Why not. If you love your archaeology, you will be enamoured by the remains of what was once a neolithic burial chamber. A true piece of scouse history.

FACT - A versatile space offering the cutting edge in film, art and media....FACT! If you fancy a change from your ordinary cinema branch, then check out the picture house for an eclectic mix of movies.

Open Eye Gallery - "Actively rethinking what a gallery can be", this institution is both a force locally and worldwide. Expect photography, instillations and poetry. This ever-changing space is full of cultural surprises.

Tate Gallery - This gallery is renowned the world over. Perched on the Albert Docks next to the River Mersey, the Tate Liverpool's constant reinvention has taken it to new soaring heights. As a student at University of Liverpool you are entitled to free entry to all paid exhibitions. Simply take your student ID card and claim the benefit upon entry.

Our Special Guests

Thank you kindly to our very own film buffs Steve Powell and Dan Slattery who came on to present a special edition of their podcast, 'Highbrow Lowbrow'. Their velvet touched voices and bawdy comradery make for a fun listen. Of course, we went for the lowbrow option (hehe).

If you want to stretch your movie smarts and get a few film suggestions in the process - you are in luck. There are plenty more episodes full of uncanny choices and nuanced film knowledge. Go and give them a listen.
