The Harold Cohen Library

Louise Minta is the Liaison Librarian who supports Medicine students by providing one to one support with using specialist subject-specific resources, finding information for your Research & Scholarships projects, and referencing your sources.

Louise has written a useful guide to some of the most important resources that every Medicine student should know about, and why and how you can use them to support your studies.

  1. ClinicalKey Student

As a Medicine student you will no doubt be aware of ClinicalKey Student through the Key titles on your reading lists. But were you aware of the additional functionality that can aid your revision?

You need to know about ClinicalKey Student because…

  • As well as a vast searchable library of essential medical textbooks, ClinicalKey Student also contains a large bank of quick access summaries, high resolution images and videos
  • You can download books to your digital Bookshelf and access them offline through the free app
  • The Bookshelf gives you the ability to create and share highlights and notes, and create your own flashcard decks
  1. Mind the Gap: A handbook of clinical signs in Black and Brown skin

Mind the Gap is a clinical handbook of signs and symptoms in Black and Brown skin. The aims of the project were to highlight the lack of diversity in medical literature and education, and teach medical students and other health professionals to better understand how some conditions can present differently in darker skins.

You need to know about Mind the Gap because…

  • The handbook and subsequent platform were created by a UK medical student, aided by a dedicated team of doctors driven to improving diversity in healthcare
  • The electronic handbook, which you can access in full, compares images of how conditions present differently on black and brown skin
  • The accompanying image bank is regularly updated with photographs of dermatological conditions
  1. EndNote Desktop

EndNote Desktop is a reference management package that enables you to build up a library of references, which you can then easily insert into your work.

You need to know about EndNote Desktop because…

  • It will save you a lot of time and effort compared with manually creating your citations and reference lists
  • You can download your own copy to use off-campus, free of charge
  • You can change your referencing style at the click of a button and EndNote Desktop will make the necessary changes. Useful when preparing potential papers for submission

All of these resources are available through the Medicine Library Guide. Take a closer look to find out more and if you have any questions, email Louise Minta.
