Staff Development

You should have Professional Development Review (PDR) within the first three months of starting your role, and going forwards you will have at least one per year with your line manager. Information about the process is available on the HR Intranet.

You must obtain permission from your line manager before attending any training.

For any training that you wish to undertake, you are required to complete the Travel and Development Request form for approval. This will also form a record of your training activity. This is a requirement for all training, including free events and in-house training.

Completion of the University's Obligatory Training is a requirement for the approval of further training requests.

Booking considerations

We’re really keen to ensure that as many staff as possible are able to benefit from training and development opportunities, and we therefore need to ensure that we are making the best use of the budget available.

  • Request forms completed online are processed by the Business Operations team. You can also attach documents to your online submission including Expression of Interest forms.
  • Approval from the budget holder is still needed, even when requests have been approved in principle by your line manager.
  • As per the University’s expense policy, it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure value for money when travelling and incurring expenses.
  • Use of your own transport should be in exceptional circumstances only (and with appropriate insurance) and must be approved by the budget holder in advance.
  • For expense claims related to travel and development you should select the following as your expense approver: Kayleigh Campbell. This is the case regardless of your team.
  • Once approved, it is your responsibility to book your own travel and accommodation. This is done via the Clarity system, accessible on the Procurement intranet page.

When requesting trains please check whether a slightly later or earlier train offers better value for money (especially if you are intending to travel at peak time). We understand that this won’t always be possible, so please note on the form if your personal circumstances mean that you are unable to travel at a different time.
