Library for Online Programmes

The Computing Services Department provides access to a range of office, statistics and other applications for installation on a personal device, please see the following pages for general information on applications available. See the Computing Services Software home for general information on available applications.

Note - some applications such as EndNote (referencing management desktop application) and SPSS are now available on the Software Downloads Portal, the portal is shown in the Software downloads page. Some applications are listed on the direct downloads page, you can also see a list of license codes (for renewal of software already installed or if you prefet to obtain the media separately).

You will be prompted for your UoL (MWS) username and password when accessing software downloads or the software portal, this is the same username/password used to log into the Library (do not type this in an email format when logging in).

Applications include -

  • Microsoft Office desktop software for installation on up to 5 personal devices and Office 365 (cloud-based applications).
  • The software portal - to download EndNote (desktop version), SPSS, CorelDraw and other desktop software.
  • Software license codes (with links to media/ downloads in some cases) for renewal of NviVo, SPSS etc. (see full list of licenses).
  • Software downloads - including stats and research applications (see full list of downloads).
  • Citrix Workspace - providing campus applications to your own device via a virtual desktop (see instructions for Windows or Mac/OSX).
  • Survey software -
JISC Online Surveys - note this UoL online survey platform requires an application to IT Service Desk to request an account.
Microsoft Forms can be used to create surveys, review results and generate Excel data (see UoL Office 365 details above).
  • Transcription of text/ data (see links above to Office 365 and related applications for access at UoL) -
Important - Any automatic transcription shoud be reviewed for accuracy, as computer-generated transcription can only provide an approximate rendering of voice narration, therefore any resulting automatic transcription should be reviewed and edited as necessary.
Word Online (Office 365) record and transcribe audio - record dictation and generate text, you can also upload a previously recorded audio file to generate a transcription when selecting the transcribe feature (see detailed advice above).
Generate a recording in a Teams interview - you may need to use MS Teams (or Zoom) to carry out online interviews for research purposes. It is possible to use the record feature (and generate a transcription during recording) in Teams, the resulting video will be saved automatically to your MS Sream account in Office 365 (also see Stream details below) allowing automatic transcription of speech. If recording in Zoom, you will likely need to manually upload the file and create a transcript in Word (see options above) or by converting the audio file to an MP4 video for upload in MS Stream for transcription (see details below). You can access MS Teams using your UoL (MWS) login for access to these platforms. You may be able to use Zoom via the UoL license, see details on the IT Services Web pages for MS Teams or Zoom.
Generate automatic captions and a transcript for recordings/video in Microsoft Stream - see the list of file formats accepted, note - Stream does not accept audio-only file formats, you may need to convert an audio-only file to a supported format such as MP4 before uploading to Stream (if you have an .MP3 audio file, you can simply try to change the file extension to .MP4 - if you can't see file extensions see this guide, the file should then be accepted in Stream as an MP4 video from which you can choose to generate a transcript), also see this guide to convert audio to MP4 in PowerPoint.
  • Remote Desktop service - you can log into campus PCs remotely to access all installed MWS applications via remote connection.

These applications are used at your own risk, the University does not support most of these applications, you should consult your tutor on the appropriate application to support your studies.
