Adobe Digital Editions is an application to read ebooks in the ACSM format, this is a token downloaded from an ebook supplier or publisher, when you open the ACSM file, the ebook will be unpacked in the Adobe Digital Editions application on your device. If you opt to register your installation of Adobe Digital Editions, you can transfer/open the same ebook instance between devices, if you opt out of an Adobe registration you cannot transfer/open ebooks in this way.
Only a small number of our ebook platforms/publishers use Adobe Digital Editions, this uses a DRM (Digital Rights Managed) format similar to Kindle, ITunes and other DRM platforms. Our main ACSM ebook provider is 'Ebook Central' where you can also typically download individual chapters in PDF format. Ebook platforms will also typically provide an on-screen version of the book in addition to DRM or PDF versions.
Note, when registering your copy of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), you can opt out of registering for an Adobe ID, by checking the tick-box "I want to authorise my computer without an ID", see screen in the presentation/guideline attached.
After installing ADE, you will need to download the ACSM file (ebook file) from the publisher or collection and double-click or open this within Adobe Digital Editions, the book will be unpacked within the ADE application.
Also note ACSM files for Adobe Digital Editions are not conventional PDFs, but have to be unpacked or downloaded once opened in the ADE application.
If the book is provided in the 'ebook Central' platform please note that all individual chapters are also downloadable in normal PDF format, these are listed a little way down the ebook page.
If you are having particular issues using an ADE book or have accessibility difficulties, please schedule a discussion with your Librarian to assist, we also have services for alternative document supply for students who have registered an accessibility statement due to individual needs, if you think you require this service please let us know.
You can also schedule a consultation with the online Librarian to go through the issue in Adobe Digital Editions.
